Yogi Badge, Step 3

Katie and I learned to sew when we were little kids. Making something from scratch is such a satisfying and gratifying feeling. When my old yoga mat bag was too small for my new, thicker mat, my first thought was to make a new one, custom fit to my mat! We created a video to show you how to make one too. This is a very easy project with no zippers, complicated patterns, or difficult stitching involved. You could even sew one by hand if you want!
This post is part of earning our Yogi Badge. In earlier posts, we explored the ancient roots of yoga history and learned about the benefits of yoga and various beginner poses. We took a 30 day yoga challenge and reflected on our experience. If you’re interested in earning the Yogi Badge, check out the information in the gray box below. Otherwise, scroll down to find out how we made our own yoga bags!
Earn the Yogi Badge
If you are interested in earning the Yogi Badge yourself, you can see the Yogi Badge Guide, or “recipe” for the badge here. Each Badge Guide contains three steps to be completed in order to earn the badge. These steps can be done on your own, but we encourage you to grab a few friends and learn together!
To complete Step 3 of the Yogi Badge we made our own yoga mat bags! We gathered at Kate’s house one afternoon with our fabric of choice and got busy.

Supplies
- 1 yard of fabric
- Sewing machine
- Sharp scissors
- Thread
- Ribbon
- A bodkin or large safety pin
- Yoga mat (to reference for size of the bag)
- Iron (optional)
Step-by-Step Directions
All in all, this project took about 30 minutes to complete. Below, we lay out simple steps for cutting out and sewing together a yoga mat bag. Refer to the video for more detailed instruction and visual cues!
The yoga mat bag has only 3 pieces.
Step 1: Cut out the large rectangle tube piece, smaller rectangle strap piece, and circular bottom piece from your fabric.
- Circular bottom piece: 6.5-7 inches wide.
- Large rectangle tube piece: 18×29 inches. CHECK
- Smaller rectangle strap piece: 4×26 inches.
Step 2: Pin and sew your bag pieces together. This process is detailed in the video. Start with sewing together the strap (small rectangle).

Step 3: Sew a channel in the top of the large rectangle, then attach the strap to the large rectangle. The strap should be attached on one end 5 inches from the bottom of the bag, and then the other end of the strap should be attached 23 inches from the bottom (17 inches above the other end of the strap).
Step 4: Sew up the long side of the large rectangle.
Step 5: Pin the circle to the bottom of the large rectangle, now in the shape of a tube and sew the two pieces together. Inside-out the bag.

Step 6: Thread a ribbon or drawstring through the channel at the top of the mat bag.
Viola! You’re ready to take your yoga mat to class or the gym. The video above provides more detail on each of the steps.
