Our next badge captures the aroma of a lazy weekend morning. We are excited to announce that our next badge is focused on coffee! A barista is a person who prepares and serves coffee drinks. In this badge, we focus on more than just making coffee drinks, but the history of coffee, the flavor profiles of coffee, and the tools and terminology associated with coffee. And of course, we will teach you to make some great coffee drinks. We also invite you to follow along with us as we go to a “cupping” or coffee tasting class.
If you are interested in earning the Barista Badge, follow along and complete the steps with us.
In our next couple of posts we share the history of coffee and recount our experience taking a coffee tasting class. We then walk you through making some delicious coffee drinks at home. Head over to our Instagram or Facebook to read some coffee trivia and fun facts and be sure to follow our blog posts for more in depth reporting on our experience earning the Barista Badge.
If you are interested in earning the Barista Badge yourself, follow along and complete the steps with us. You can find our free Barista Badge Guide here.

Steps to Earn the Barista Badge
Step 1: Explore the history of coffee. Learn about coffee terminology and the tools used to make various coffee drinks. Watch a Youtube video to learn how coffee drinking became a morning ritual and find out about the various techniques used to make coffee. Check out a coffee recipe or history book at the library, or listen to a podcast on the topic.
Step 2: Learn from others. Find a cupping near you! A cupping is a coffee tasting process where you smell the beans and taste a couple types of coffee. Coffee shops sometimes offer tastings and roasters may offer tours. Ask questions of your local barista or find a friend who has worked in a coffee shop to teach you a thing or two.
Step 3: Create and take action. Learn to make great coffee drinks at home and then share with others! Host a tasting for friends or family. Try coffee made in different ways: drip, pour-over, and french press. Share what you’ve learned about the history of coffee with your guests while you make them delicious coffee-based beverages.
