Joyful Spa Day and DIY Face Masks

Joy Seeker Badge, Step 3

Smell is an important component of feeling joy. When you think about your favorite smells, what comes to mind? Smells that remind you of places you love? Places, people, or events that bring you joy? The smell of almond brings me to my mom’s kitchen, just before the holidays, making a big batch of spritz cookies. The smell of lavender soothes me and makes me feel content. For Step 3 of the Joy Seeker Badge, we are celebrating the joy of smell by creating our own social-distancing-safe spa day complete with DIY face masks made with pantry staples.

Below, we tell you how we set up our spa day and share the recipes for two DIY face masks you can make out of pantry staples. The joyful smells we chose for our face masks were coffee and tea tree.

Setting up for Spa Day

We raided our bathroom cabinets for spa day supplies we already had on hand. We found body scrubs and lotions we could use for a hand treatment. We set up “joyful” trays for a colorful and fun visual effect. One tray held the pantry ingredients and the other held the essential oils, bowls, measuring spoons, and a few wash cloths. The process of creating the masks was a joyful part of the experience.

We turned to Blissonly.com to find out how to make natural face masks and lip scrubs from pantry staples. To really capture the joy of smell, we were drawn to the aromas of coffee and tea tree oil. We decided on a tea tree and coconut oil face mask, and an olive oil and coffee scrub face mask.

Tea Tree and Coconut Oil Face Mask

Supplies:

  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda
  • 3 drops of tea tree or melaluca essential oil
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil

Put all ingredients in a small bowl and stir!

Wash face and leave it a little bit wet. Gently massage face mask onto skin in a circular motion for 1-2 minutes. Leave on for about 5 minutes. Rinse off well with warm water. Optional: apply moisturizer.

Coffee and Olive Oil Face Mask

Supplies:

  • 2 Tablespoons ground coffee
  • 3 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar

Put all ingredients in a small bowl and stir!

The directions for this mask are the same as for the coconut oil mask: Wash face and leave it a little bit wet. Gently massage face mask onto skin in a circular motion for 1-2 minutes. Leave on for about 5 minutes. Rinse off well with warm water. Optional: apply moisturizer.

A joyful spa day is just what each of us needed. It felt so nice to create something natural to put on our bodies and spend some focused time relaxing.
